• To build tone through texture and value.
  • To use shapes with predominantly soft edges.
  • To create dynamic marks with a brayer that force me to think about the elements of design in a way that is typically outside of my comfort zone.
  • To develop a figure performing a task (a concept that I typically am at ease rendering realistically and traditionally in acrylic with a brush). I am not content with how the hands turned out in this piece, partly because I should have painted it larger. This piece is less than 8.5″x11″. I wasn’t planning on getting detailed with the hands. I just wanted to render their silhouette, but the broad strokes of the brayer did not allow for much control and I did not want to rely on a brush for much. I wanted to use the edge of the brayer to create gesture, but the precision for detail on this point was too large for such small of an area for hands.
