• To evoke a feeling of being in a particular environment.
  • Layering mark making and allowing permeability. I think this is strongest in the area behind and around the figure’s head/arm. There is a sense of depth from scattered light in this area that creates drama.
  • Destroying some areas and rebuilding others. The area between the right side of the boat and the right edge of the picture plane contains no actual horizon line or sea level. It is a shape of minimal texture that overlaps into both the sea and sky. This shape is actually the same size and proportion as the left bow of the boat (light brown color). This was done on purpose to create a positive/negative relationship that mimics the movement of a boat bouncing on water.
  • Accepting the idea that a finished sketch can be considered a finish because there is just enough information to lead the viewer in and just enough information left out to make them want to stay in the painting and create their own interpretation on things.
